Renal clearance of magnesium in sheep given citric acid and(or) potassium chloride.

چکیده
Two experiments were conducted. The first tested the hypothesis that KC1 or citric acid or both increase plasma clearance of Mg by lowering tubular reabsorption of Mg in the kidney. Plasma and urinary responses in mature ewes to intraruminal KC1, citric acid, KC1 + citric acid and a water control were evaluated in a 4 • 4 Latin square design. An IV injection of Mg (300 mg) at time 0 was used to promote interactions between circulating treatments and plasma Mg, thereby providing a magnification of changes in the tubular reabsorption mechanism. Plasma and urine analysis revealed increased (P<.05) plasma Mg clearances (in relation to control values) due to citric acid and KC1 + citric acid. Increases due to KC1 were noted; however, results were variable. Glomerular filtration rates (creatinine clearances) did not differ (P>.05) between treatments. Only the KC1 treatment tended to cause an increased filtered load of plasma Mg; citric acid and KC1 + citric acid tended to cause reductions in the net tubular reabsorption of Mg. Exp. 2 was designed to test the same "renal antagonists" when plasma Mg was decreased to levels below "normal" (< 1.7 mg/100 ml). Four mature ewes fed a Mg-deficient diet were given the same treatments as in Exp. 1 without an IV injection of Mg. Treatment responses were evaluated through a paired comparison with the previous day, when ewes were not treated. Increases in urinary Mg above control values were induced by KC1 and KC1 + citric acid; however, the magnitude of responses varied. Urinary P and

Effect of oral potassium and sodium chloride on plasma composition of cattle: a grass tetany related study.
M ANY factors have been implicated in the etiology of grass tetany including hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia, class of animal, stage of production and various dietary factors. Hypomagnesemia has been the most consistent clinical symptom. Elevated levels of dietary potassium (K) (Kunkel, Burns and Camp, 1953; Ward, 1966a) and nitrogen (Redmond, 1950; Metson et al., 1966) have lowered plasma magnesi...
متن کاملProtective Effect of Forced Hydration with Isotonic Saline, Potassium Chloride and Magnesium Sulfate on Cisplatin Nephrotoxicity: An Initial Evaluation
Background: Nephrotoxicity is one of the major side-effects of cisplatin that has been seen in about 20% of treated patients. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a forced hydration protocol comprised of isotonic saline, potassium chloride (KCl) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) on prevention of cisplatin nephrotoxicity. Methods: This cross sectional prospective study was perfor...
متن کاملEffect of acute metabolic acidosis and alkalosis on acetate and citrate metabolism in the rat.
An enhanced urinary excretion of citrate after administration of alkali and a diminished citrate excretion after administration of ammonium chloride were first observed by Ostberg in 1931 (1). More recently, it has been pointed out that the quantity of citrate excreted in the urine is not a direct consequence of acidification or alkalinization of the urine as believed by Ostberg, but rather is ...

Background and Aims: Passiflora caerulea has antioxidant properties. The present study aimed to assess the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Passiflora caerulea aerial parts on cadmium chloride-induced renal dysfunction in male rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 54 adults male Wistar rats 200±10 gr were divided into 6 groups (N=9). Control group, the sham group that re...
